Most Kills and Most Variety goes to...

About 40 people gathered last night at The Anchorage in Bluff to celebrate the achievements of Bluff Hill Enviro Trust this year. The highlight was the awarding of prizes to mustelid trap sponsors and legendary volunteers. Above is the lovely Rose Johnson and husband; Rose is the sponsor of trap M37 which won the top prize for 'Most kills & most variety'. M37 has managed to ensnare (just this year) 3 mice, 9 rats, 2 weasels and 1 stoat, -almost a royal flush of pest mammals. Rose was given return tickets for 2 to Stewart Island courtesy of Stewart Island Experience. Other prizes...

  • Jo Sherriff & Jo Wilson (trap M41) won a possum trap from Environment Southland for most amount of rats killed.
  • Nicola Stretch (trap M27) also won a return trip to Stewart Island courtesy of Stewart Island Experience. M27 had the 2nd most kills, -1 weasel and 10 rats.
  • Volunteer line checkers Ted Hansen and Ray Fife were each awarded the book 'Rakiura Heritage' (donated by DOC) for their dedication and reliability.
  • Volunteer beach clean upper/track cutter, Tracker Black, was awarded a $50 meal voucher from The Drunken Sailor for his enthusiasm, inspiration and hard work.

Prizes for the raffles were very local; Sanfords donated 4 salmon fillets, Southland Community Nursery donated 2 boxes of plants, there was also a few bottles of wine, Southland Underwater DVD's, a few more possum traps and a sack of pinecones. It was great to look around the room and see everyone chatting away with their bits of fish and native plants stashed under their chairs. Another successful year.
