I did some Avatar inspired swinging on supplejack vines and jumping between mossy logs this morning during my usual gambol through the rata forest on Bluff Hill. It was one of those distinct mornings where the light shines in shafts onto the forest floor and lights up all the fallen red miro berries and steam rises off the fern fronds. The birds were properly noisy and I got the distinct feeling that yes, all this work is, well, working. It has to be. We're killing mustelids, we're killing possums and we're putting a shite load of rat poison out there. There are trees unmolested by marsupial Australians, lots of birds and there's fruit on the ground that would usually be snapped up by rats. All is well, I was feeling good until I came home and started planning for our next Beach Clean-Up and stumbled upon this article about plastic in the sea...
It's well worth a read, but before you start crying into your non-alcoholic beverages remember that the world is not necessarily going to hell in a plastic handbag and that there's lots we can do... like volunteering to help clean up Bluff's coastline! We'll keep you posted.
